Blog Post #10 I-Make Research

So far in the I-Make project I did look up some stuff for one day really quick. It was pretty easy to find things about my topic. I just looked up the history of crocheting. In my research I found that there is no specific time or place that it originated from. I did find out some of the theories of when and where they started. Such as Arabia, South America, China, Europe in the 1700s, or other people think it came from Europe but a century later. It also lists the different ways you say it in different languages. Like it is called haken in Holland, haekling in Denmark, hekling in Norway and virkning in Sweden. Which apparently the word crochet comes from croc, or croche for the French word for hook.
There was also a woman named Mlle. Riego de la Branchardiere who published many pattern books back in the 1800s. They also think that she invented “lace-like” crocheting. Later in the article I was reading the author states that all the types of material they used to use as string and hooks. Like they would use hair, grass, and animal fur as the string. Fishbone, wood, horns, teeth, and walrus tusks to use as hooks to crochet. Overall it was pretty interesting to find out all these weird things about crocheting. I think I am going to start watching “how to” videos next and possibly start trying to make something.

I-Make

For the I-Make project I would like to be able to try to crochet. I am a pretty weird girl and do random things. When I was little I would always watch my aunt and grandmother crochet and I would try to learn, but that was back when I was like eight so I don’t remember what learned. Now that I am older I will probably be able to actually learn and remember how to do it. My aunt and my grandmother have passed away, so I guess the reason why I am picking this so that I can remember them or connect to them.  Another reason is because my mom really likes having the crocheted pieces around the house, if I learn I can make some for my mother. Plus  I will have something to do when I am bored! Though I am not going to lie, I am not exactly sure what we will be writing about with this. But I might as well make this fun for myself and enjoy this!

What does Joining a Community look like?

In short terms, my manifesto is to do well in college. Since I have started here, I am not going to lie; I have been scared out of my mind and have been stressed. I have never really been someone who is good at writing essays or good at taking standardized test (well any important test in the first place). Plus making projects takes time and I am someone who is a big procrastinator.
Here at Regis I have been challenged to each of these three things that I hope to improve on. So far I have turned in two essays, have taken two exams, and have worked on a group project. I am working on another two projects that I’m still kind of having trouble doing. I have gotten a C on one exam and one essay. But overall in both of those classes I am doing well. I have gotten advice and feedback from those professors so that I do better next time. I am excited to improve on my test taking skills and my writing skills.
I am more excited to learn to write better papers. This is because I know papers are quite important in the college life. Plus I feel like it will help my overall writing skills. Which I feel would help me get through college. Plus it will help me later in life.

Blog 4- Maker's Manifesto

So I don’t really know what a manifesto is. I have tried to look up the definition but I don’t really understand it. Though everyone I’ve asked can’t really explain to me what it is. What I have heard from most people is that a manifesto is like a mission statement. This prompt asks “What is your short maker manifesto?” I do not know if this is referring to like the maker’s project that we had to do for Cisco or if it is asking just in general. With the Cisco project my maker’s mission statement would have to be for me and my group to make a good project that they can use on Cisco and that it will actually be helpful for him. He seems like a really good and happy dog to be getting hurt like that.
But if this is asking what our makers mission statement in general, like a goal we have to make for life at this moment then it would have to be that I would like to make good projects and finals for my classes, as well as good essays. I don’t know if this counts but this is something I will try to do. Or even if I don’t do that great, I hope to improve in all these things. One of my biggest fears would be to disappoint my family. Which the way that I would do that is by failing in school. If I make good projects and take good tests and turn in good essays, I hope to pass. I know this may seem a bit weird or maybe not, maybe that’s what’s pushing us all to do better in life.
I come from a family of 5 other siblings, my mother and father have had struggles to give us everything and try their best to give us things that we want. So far my parents slowly keep getting better kid. My oldest brother, Jessie, didn’t get through high school because he had a son when he was 16 and left to get money whichever way he can. My oldest sister, Nora, dropped out of high school for the same exact reason. My older brother, Alex had to go to summer school in order to graduate, which he graduated late. My older sister, Mariela, had to redo some classes in order to graduate on time and she struggled with it. I so far am the one who has done the best, academically. I graduated on time in the top 3% of my class. I have a little brother which I hope he continues the pattern and strives to do better than me.
I look at my parents and try my best to make them happy and proud of me. They have done so much for me and I want to be able to do well in college to be able to pay them back for everything. If I do things right I hope that instead of them taking care of me financially it’ll be the other way around.

Blog #3 Writing Relationship

I am honestly a terrible writer. I do not have a very good relationship with writing. I give short paragraphs, short essays, simple words, and have trouble keeping the reader interested. I am not a very interesting writer; I get straight to the point and have trouble getting into details with things. I also have trouble keeping my writing going and start kind of improvising, like right now. But also I am terrible a typing as well. The role it has in my future is obviously important, which sucks. Everyone will most likely have to worry about writing when it comes to their jobs when they are older. It doesn't matter if you end up a secretary, or someone who landscapes, you are still going to have to write.  I wish I was better at writing but I plan to get better. I’m not exactly sure how I will go through with it; it may help that Ii have a few classes that require you to write essays and many other things. Well honestly I’m not that bad at writing, I just don’t try that much. Like I can write most things just naturally but I just feel like it’s boring, doesn’t get to the point, or doesn’t say what I wanted it to explain. Oh! And also to make it worse, I am terrible at spelling as well haha! I’m really not that good at spelling, even with some words that aren’t that hard to spell. It’s pretty sad but I hope that I will improve on my spelling as well.
