Process of Making

The process of making something before I made it was hard. First it was hard because I had to research it and the type of research I was looking for and actually found. Through the research process I had searched the words “Make your own dog beds” and everything that popped up were journals and websites with people that made their own dog beds. These were all titled “DIY Dog beds”. Every single one of them had the same steps but had their own different way of doing things by the materials they used. Then when I put everything together and tried to make the prototype of the dog bed I found it very difficult to make because I am not a very artsy type of person. The bed is not just sewing things together it is more like quilting the pieces of materials together and making one complete big bed. I can apply this process to other places in my life now that I am going to school and having to plan my future. I have to research which is going to my advisors and asking them about my schedule and plans for next semester to complete the pre-nursing requirements. Then I have to do the steps on my own which is like putting the material of the bed together. Sometimes I will mess up and fail like I did with the bed. It fell apart and did not look like a bed. That goes into the classes I will take. I can fail but it is okay to fail as long as I learn by my mistakes and then fix the later on. I can retake classes and fulfil my job as a student to reach the goals I want to reach and have a great career in life.

Research Process and Similarities to Other Projects

My research that I’m doing for my make is research from the internet that are journals from people who have created the same things that I am trying to make. Therefore this process is difficult and easy at the same time. It is difficult because not many things are found on my topic. It is easy because the things that I do find on my topic are all similar or basically all the same which can also make this difficult because then there will not be much variety or much of anything to write about when it comes to writing the paper. There are cites that I found where all the things on there are DIY.  I have found three cites that are all like this. This differs from other research projects that I have done because all my sources are from the internet. Another difference is that it is not written research. It is mostly looking at pictures and following instructions because this project is about making something. Since I am making a dog bed for my puppy Sarabi, the cites where I have been on all have pictorials and instructions on how to make this big bed. It is similar to other research projects that I have done by trying to find out how to write this paper. I find all of these projects very hard to do because research papers and writing papers in general are always hard for me.

I-Make Proposal

What I am making for my I-Make project is a big doggie bed for my baby Husky, Sarabi. She will get older and along with getting older she will get bigger which is why I chose this to be my project. Instead of buying a big bed for her I will buy the materials needed that are similar to the bed she has now as a puppy. I had first asked my mom to make this for her because she had already made a medium sized bed for my cat Tigger. Since she has experience making one I thought it would be nice if she made another one but a little bit bigger. Since we have a project where we have to make something I have decided that instead of asking my mom to make the bed for Sarabi, I will make an attempt at making one. Like I said before I will just buy the materials needed to make the bed. My mom had the sewing machine and the other tools needed to make the arts and crafts. She also has a lot of books that show instructions and suggestions of what to buy and how to make what you want to make. To make this more of a challenge I will just get the materials and come up with my own ideas to make the bed. I will get the ideas by looking at the bed she has now or just look up other beds for dogs without searching for the instructions on how to make it.

Regis Experiences to Manifesto

My experience starting at Regis with the idea of my manifesto is a sort of connection at the start. My manifesto talks about being at the assistance of people and doing the best that I can to help people who need it. No matter what the situation is I like to do what I can to make people happy. I do not like when people complain or when they have something negative to say about something. Therefore I try to make people happy with whatever their concern is about. This does not mean that I let people walk all over me and demand me around when they do not like something. I simply try to make their situation better and if they do not like it after my attempts then it is now their own problem to fix. My reasons for coming to Regis were because of its small community, the distance from my house and most importantly the nursing program they have here. In my manifesto I talked about becoming a nurse and that I have done certain steps like becoming a CNA right when I turned sixteen. I was old enough to get my CNA license and that is exactly what I did. When I was taking my class a lot of people said that they were taking the class to get some sort of credit for their nursing program. That made me think that I was one step ahead of others. I’ve heard the nursing program here is phenomenal and not only have I heard it but I have also has personal experiences where the medical people I have come in contact with come from this school and I have had a great experience with every single one of them. Not many people can say that about their doctors, nurses, and physical therapy. This straight connection makes my experiences contribute more into my manifesto.

Pro and Cons to Joining a Community

Something positive about a community is that you get to meet new people who share the same interests and values as you. You join a community for a specific reason and those reasons are almost always based on your values. When meeting new people in this community you can begin to form new friendships and those could become very important people in your life. They can become people who you will hold a tight bond with or they can be someone you never want to have in your life. Either way, both people are important because they can help you grow as a person. Now that you are a part of a community you can choose to participate in the activities other people from your community participate in. something negative about joining a community is: what if you don't like it? If you join a community and you don't like it, it's kind of hard to stay in and be connected. It's hard to keep up with their activities and do the things that that community does. The thing about this is that you can step out of the community easily but sometimes it's not that easy. There are other negative things about joining a community like groups that are mean and hard for them to accept you in a community.

Jargon in my Community

I am doing a cosmetic community. This community is looking for people to share their creativity with and they also solicit different cosmetic companies to get some profit. Some of the jargon that I encounter with obviously words that are used to describe what is used and where. For example @AuroraMakeup uses an eye shadow base to intensify the colors for the eye shadows. An eye shadow base is usually a light color when using colorful colors on the eyes.  The socket line/eye crease is the part of the eye that creases when the eye is opening and closing. The brow bone is the bone that the eyebrow is on. The waterline is the inside part of the eye where the eyelashes are. And the tear duct is the last part of the interior part of the line. The eye lid is what allows the eye to open and close. These are parts on the eye that are used constantly when people talk about makeup on the eyes. When it comes to the rest of the face some more jargon that I encounter are words like contouring. Contouring helps to shape the face out with light and dark shades that are blended to match the skin tone. It can be used to make the eyes, nose, and lips look either smaller or bigger. It can also make the face look slimmer depending on the way the contour on the cheekbones is applied. When it comes to the actual materials, other words like: cat eye effect, pencil brush, flat brush, blending brush, liquid liner, gel liner and pencil liner are all used. Different brushes are used for different parts of the face. Some of these words are pretty much self-explanatory but others are not but looking at the videos and paying attention to what they put where has helped me find out how to make a face change.

What's it Like to Join a Commuity?

Joining a community can be a mix of emotions and feelings. Personally if I am joining a community in which I do not know much of the community’s rules and customs then I would be really nervous. If I have a little more background knowledge about the community I’m joining and the way the system works within a community I would be excited and anxious to join but I would still feel nervous for the new experiences. A community that I joined was a community that transitioned from middle school into high school. I have known my friends in middle school for a long time and I was scared to go off into a place where I would know no one and have to start all over again. I took many steps to get into high school. First, it was the shadowing process. I had to go to the schools that interested me and shadow a person for the entire day, which meant that I would follow them from class to class learning their material and see how it would be if I were to go to that school. I shadowed three different school. The one that I liked most was Arrupe Jesuit High School. Then came the application process. Here I applied to all the high schools that I would like to attend. I got accepted into all of them. After deciding, I chose one. Transitioning from a small community where I had twelve people in my class to one hundred was very nerve wracking. The good thing was that I made friends quick. A coupled friends stayed and most left towards the end of my senior year. This type of community was one where you had to be accepted in but not all of them are like that. I think that these types of communities are better organized and have a lot of control over their population.

My Manifesto

My short maker manifesto talks about how I am a maker of everything I could possibly be within my working boundaries. This means that I can make many things while I work at the nursing home. The things I make are all different. Although I make things physically that can be used to help someone out I like to focus more on what I have made to better my future and the future of others.

Walking into a classroom filled with strangers all seeking to reach their goals. I walk into the classroom where I will be learning to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. The summer of my sophomore year a company named Julia Temple Healthcare Center reached out to my school asking if anyone over the age of sixteen was interested in accepting an offer they had. The deal was that if the company pays the student’s CNA school’s tuition and passes that the student will have to work two years for their company. I passed all the tests, received my CNA license, and up to this day I am still working for the company that paid my way through school. I never knew that CNAs existed. I knew that nursing homes and obviously hospitals existed but I always thought that the ones in charge of making sure all the patients were well taken care of were nurses. After a couple moths passed that I was working there, I made up my mind on what I wanted to my career to be. I wanted to become a nurse. I think that the community in which I live is not very well educated. I do not want my community to be like that anymore. I am going to better myself and my future to help those do the same. I am a maker of keeping God’s creation alive and healthy. I am well aware that this will not always happen and that there is room for loss and failure, but it feels like I have a responsibility of trying to be the best that I can be and make my living worthwhile.

My Forced Relationship with Writing

I do not have a very good relationship with writing. I think all people are creative in their own ways and some of those people are creative in writing. I am not one of those creative people when it comes to writing. I always have a tough time in class when I have to write a paper because most of the times we have to write a paper on the things we read previously in class. Ever since I was younger I was not really able to understand everything I read especially when it’s a lot of reading. Another reason why I’m not good at writing is because sometimes I have to write about myself, for example this “Personal Narrative” that we are supposed to write in a thousand words or more is hard for me. One reason why it is hard for me is because I do not like writing about myself. The second reason on why it is hard for me to write is because the prompt to writing this paper is also challenging. I find it difficult writing about being a “maker” because I do not really make anything. So, it’s kind of hard to write about something that I’m not. I do not like writing. I don’t even like texting! I would rather talk on the phone or talk face-to-face. Although I do not like it, writing plays a very important part in my future. Since I have to do it I almost every class it is required for me to do the papers and get a passing grade. If I do not get a passing grade then I don’t pass the class and I fail and I won’t get into the nursing program and then I will not become a nurse and I’ll have to either take the classes again until I pass or stay as a CNA f-o-r-e-v-e-r. Which means that I’m going to have to start liking writing, or do the best that I can while not liking it.

Learning and What Not

FEAR.  Fear is the first thing that comes to mind when I think about learning. My next feelings are anxiety and excitement. When a teacher says, “We will be learning about covalent bonds” I do not have a very pleasant reaction. One, because I am not good at all in chemistry, and two is because I don’t like the feeling of failing even if it’s okay to fail sometimes. Then, we learn what we have to learn…and I’m lost! I am a visual learner and my chemistry teacher reads the things we see on the boards. That’s not helping me at all in any way what so ever because I know how to read already. Lastly, I go to my teammate and ask her for some help. Gina then tutors me and helps me find the solution to my problems. I like learning new things at my own pace and when I’m not depending my entire life’s career on it. If I fail chemistry I do not have a chance into making it into the nursing program. That devastates me just think about it and that’s why not all my learning experiences go well.

When it comes to learning about what other ways can make you a better writer, or learning about rhetoric, or why the healthcare in America is changing so much I don’t seem to panic as intensely. I get into a much more comfortable stage and get sprung over my own excitement. I think learning is very fun when it comes to learning new things that I know I will do well in or at least have a good time learning about. To end this..my experience with learning science based and things that are out of this world don’t really fit into my favorite section of learning, but when it comes to new, fun, hands-on type of stuff I really enjoy the lessons and myself.

Knowledge behind DIY

My knowledge of DIY culture is not very much. There have not been many moments in my life where I have been able to say, “I can make that”. The only times I ever say that are when I see pictures or videos of really fancy and pretty hair styles and makeup. You probably would not think that I am into doing hair and makeup by looking at me because my hair is never done and neither is my makeup. To me it is a hobby, therefore I only do it for special events, when I am bored, and when I want to try something new. I have always had a thing for cosmetics. When I was younger I would go to my neighbor’s house to do her eyebrows. A couple years ago is when I started to do people’s hair for parties and dances. Last year for Prom I did my best friend’s hair and makeup. My long-term goal is to become a nurse and assist people with their health. I think I am on the right path and am pretty confident in myself that I can go through with it, but my backup plan will be to study cosmetology. I love messing with my hair and face especially with more dramatic looks. The way this connects to my other classes would be using creativity. There are many things that can be done with makeup. I guess I could call myself a maker of applying my art on people to make heads turn. Cosmetics has always been an interest for me and it connects to my life in many ways. Now when people call me or text me they can ask me for my help either for medical uses or more personal uses like going on a hot date.

Drag Bag

Hello Makers!
Since we are making this bag, I found a helpful website where it told me that a drag bag consists of many things to help comfort the dog. Obviously, not all of the materials or details need to be put in the drag bag considering the cost and way of putting it in, but we could give it a try. The materials are,
  • Water-resistant nylon lining keeps floors clean from accidents
  • Nylon material slides easily on carpets and floors.
  • Vent, on top, allows for air circulation
  • Full length zippers on both sides for easy entry/exit.
  • Absorbent inside liner made of Poochpants material is removable and machine washable, if soiled.
  • I can't wait to see how this will turn out!
