The words DIY, at first, seem like the typical house wife making phone charging baskets out of an old bottle of Johnson's baby lotion. But, with any kind of skill set, there are different levels at which people are on. Artists make things, cooks make things, construction workers make things, and even our little house wife in the previous example makes things. Even though these people are vastly different in what they do, each and everyone of them still makes something. My dad for example, is a welder. He makes fences, bed-frames, and he even help build the Sports Authority Field in Denver. He essentially makes something new out of something else. Living and growing up in that house hold, we've always made what we needed or even wanted. So along the years I've picked up a few tricks of the trade. I first started out with small projects such as dyeing my jeans pink, then as my skills progressed, I made a few dresses. Soon I was painting furniture for my room and then I was making furniture with my dad. My projects have always been pretty diverse. I've done sewing and dyeing to making lotions and lip balms to making jewelry and clocks, to furniture and curtains.
The last thing I saw I could make was actually outdoor curtains for my mom. She has a pergola in her backyard and around 5 o’clock or so the sun shines directly on the back porch making it hard to stay outside. Outdoor curtains are about 60$ a panel and we needed about 4 panels, so instead of just going and buying something, we brainstormed and even looked online to see if someone had done it before. Turns out, this one lady did with 10$ drop cloths you can get at Home Depot. She used a bathroom rod with springs to hold up her drop cloths. However, those kinds of rods were too short for how far our beams outside were apart. So we came up with the idea of drilling in hooks on the top beam and having the curtain hang from it like a hanger in your closet. The total project cost ended up being around 70$ instead of +300$. So not only did she save some money, but we also got to spend quality time together while doing it.
