When I think of learning, I think of the different ways in which people learn. Some learn by hand, others learn by seeing. It’s fascinating to me how different techniques are used to reach the minds of different people. There is even diversity in my own household. When my mother was in school, she only attended exam dates, and aced every single one of them, it pissed her teachers off to hell. Shes very technical based, in that when she knows something, she just knows. And In that way, I can relate. I learn by sight or writing something down, If its color coded and organised, I’m learning. My dad however can learn with his hands, If he gets an idea for something, He doesn't write it out or even draw it, he just goes with it. I think this is why teachers have to approach the same concepts, over and over again, just in different forms. Lecture, diagrams, homework, etc. I've listed a link to find out what kind of learner you are!
I do remember one instance in which I had to learn something completely out of my comfort zone. We were on the osteology unit in my forensics class. She wanted us not only to memorize the proper names of the bones, but also the identifying markers. Not many people know that there are 7 bones surrounding the eye orbit. For every test, she gave us fragments of bones, and we not only had to know what bones were in the fragment, but also the markers, and also how to side it. She told us, that to learn the bones, we just had to handle them. We were never going to learn from the packets, but to begin with, it seemed like we were never going to learn at all. After a few days of just looking and trying to figure things out and after poking myself and placing bones on my body, I realized that if I taught somebody what different parts were, or if I helped somebody, then that's how I learned best. It really stayed with me after that. And now to this day, if I see a skull on a C.S.I. show, I will correct them because 9 times out of 10 they've got it wrong.
I love the example of bodied learning that you have in here. What do you think that means about the process of learning for you and your body? I love the way that learning is a whole body affair, but so often we relegate the body to just sitting there. If you could redesign our classroom what would you do?
ReplyDeleteStudying forensics is interresting! What do you find interresting about it? In other words, why did you decide to study it?
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, that sounds like a crazy awesome skill to have. Second of all, it's really cool they way you figured out your best way to learn and then applied it!
ReplyDeleteI love how you barreled through your tough spot and rocked it! I wish i could do that!
