Blog 1: DIY Culture

I have always been fascinated with people who can see an idea on Pinterest and then are easily able to replicate it. Unfortunately, that is not that case with me. I love trying to recreate and replicate ideas that I see on Pinterest, because receiving something that someone took the time to make by hand makes it so much more special. The one thing I can definitely say about all my attempts at DIY projects is that they are certainly unique and one of a kind.  Another thing I really like about DIY projects is that you can really see the personality of the person who made it throughout the craft. It can be really annoying going to the store and seeing something you love but wishing you could change certain features. With a DIY project, the freedom to add or take away is completely up to the maker and the personality they want to give their creation. Making things really does flow into all parts of your life whether it’s making a meal, building a book shelf or even writing a paper. The start to end process will be consistent throughout many things with only a few modifications along the way. If you have no plan or are impatient in your project it will show, just like if you are well planned and organized that will also be obvious.  Below is an example of a Modge-podge picture canvas that I attempted to make for one of my friends. Needless to say, it didn’t look anything like this and after my second attempt I decided to embrace defeat and make the best of it. The best thing about gifts that are handmade is that they show the time and effort someone took to make that gift for you. It’s the little mistakes throughout the project that give it character and meaning. Although I may not be the best maker, I am a maker at heart.
