Second Life Community Jargon
I think all people would agree that in every community, jargon does in fact exist. Within each community, I believe that jargon differentiates, and that it is compiled based off of social statuses, and different cultural backgrounds. The online community which I decided to join is called Second Life. I have had a very interesting experience experimenting with Second Life, and I can truly say, it is strange, but oddly fun at times. Since Second Life is basically an online chat community, I always tend to find "destinations" that have at least 50 users in the same location, because chatting with others then becomes more promising. However, all of my chatting experience with other users has shown me how weird some people are, when living in their "second lives". Today, I experienced the jargon of a full marriage proposal! In paragraph form, a virtual man proposed to his virtual girlfriend and expressed his great love for her, and how he would spend the rest of his life with no one else. That marks my first time witnessing a marriage proposal in person, or at least virtually. Soon after I witnessed this proposal, I ventured into a dance club, and I really wanted to learn how to dance, so naturally, I asked if someone would teach me. In response to my request, an anonymous user told me I was rude, and needed to have better manners! All I wanted to do was learn how to dance! Besides my personal experiences on Second Life, I have observed various conversations between users that I have not been involved in. The jargon I have seen the most happens to be inappropriate, either downgrading women, or people cussing or saying sarcastic comments. Of course, the jargon on the online community varies quite differently from that of the real world. Although Second Life jargon is weird and strange, I find it to be very entertaining, and often times funny.
