The Pros and Cons of Community

The great thing about community is that everyone in the community can relate to each other in some particular way. The members of the group are, in most cases, going through similar situations. Community gives you a basis for connection and communication. You can find communities for everything. They stem from countless of sources. The terrific thing about communities is that if you can’t find a community that works for you, then you can create your own. There are countless options when it comes to finding a community that relate to your hobbies, personality, goals, etc. to other people. When you find that community, it’s a beautiful occurrence. It’s also feasible to be apart of multiple communities at one time. Being a member of different communities brings different perspectives into your life. A variety of perspectives in your life is healthy and keeps you grounded.
However, every good thing has a downside. This is also true with communities. However, overcoming the negative aspects of communities is achievable and will be worth it in the end. Joining a community can be difficult in the first stage, but all it takes is some adjusting. Adjusting to the group that you wish to join takes time. It doesn’t happen overnight. Also, in most cases, the “veterans” of the group will be more than helpful during the adjusting process. While adjusting it’s also important to ask questions. Ask questions about the group, the format of meetings, and the tasks that make the group function properly. Another downside of communities, is that you may feel intimidated by the other members of the group. The “veterans” are likely to have strong opinions regarding certain issues. However, it’s important to remember that all the members of the community are there for the same commonality and that it’s okay to express your opinion.
In conclusion, communities have their upsides and downsides, you just have to push through the difficulties to reap the rewards. The sense of belonging that is gained through being apart of a community is worth all the obstacles that you must overcome.
