What is positive about community and what is difficult about community?
There are many pros and cons of joining a community. For me, the pros were few with my new group. One of the first ideas I enjoyed was creating my own avatar. I thought it was a fun way to make yourself unique in any way you could think or imagine. You don't have the power to change yourself everyday, but in Second Life you can constantly be changing your persona. Another positive thing about my community was the easy access to explore crazy new worlds and places. All you have to do is click on a destination and teleport. It makes me wish that in real life we could do that. Being on Second Life is an escape to study and immerse your own imagination.
When first joining Second Life, I didn't think I'd have such a big problem with it, but the more and more I explored I didn't care for it at all. What made Second Life difficult for me was the context of the way people acted. I felt left out if I wasn't acting as sexual as the other avatars or dressed skimpy. A big issue I had with this site was the chatting aspect of it. If you weren't dressed right or dancing a certain way, people would message me and tell me to leave or get it. Not many people made me feel welcomed.
Your observations of second life are right on. I would love an example, and I look forward to reading more about it in the final draft of you paper. I like that you really tried something new in this project Claudia!
