Joining the Lifeguard Community

My first and current job is being a lifeguard for the City of Thornton. You wouldn't think of us lifeguards of having our own community, but it is present everyday during work. Life guarding is more than a job to us. Not to brag, but almost all of us have saved a person's life. That in itself is a very heavy burden to bare, and to be welcomed into a community where safety, responsibility and care are the number one priorities, took some work.

I am not talking about the actual interview. If you have good people skills and can swim decently, then you can land a job. I'm talking about the community of the actual life guards and being able to fit in with them. It was daunting to realize how many people each guard had saved. That plus how many years they had been life guards, made them somewhat god like in my eyes. I totally had to be a part of it.

To be accepted, you had to be good at your job. You had to pass audits with flying colors, save all your nemos, (fake babies that are thrown in the pool to make sure you're paying attention), be able to take care of vomit, feces and disgruntled guests with ease, and be able to get along with existing life guards, and you must ALWAYS do your cleaning on time. Do all of that and you're in the clear. It's just all of that wasn't easy.

This is my third year being a lifeguard and I am so happy with my job. I doubt that there is any other job more rewarding for younger people out there, and I would recommend everyone give it a try. Joining the League, (inside joke) was very hard, but very fun. And being the thing that prevents people from getting hurt is really the best part.
