I been working on an idea for a computer controlled mountain bike system. I was thinking a robotic micro controller, probably programable in c code. That would be hooked up to a number of sensors, force, distance, taco, etc. The micro controller would use the sensory input to control a number or linear actuators and servos so that, suspension, compression, shifting, lockout, and brake would either be automatically controlled, or “ride by wire” controllable.
To get this project off the ground I need to brush up on my c coding ability. Then I need to get a micro controller, sensors and actuators so i can start coding and writing the operating system. Then I need to look at mounting of the sensors and actuators and wiring everything. I do not see any problems with the implementation of this project, the only problem that I see are that so of the parts pessary are a little on the expensive side. Also this project is very scalable because I can start with controlling only a couple of the systems first, and then once I have a bit more experience, control the entire bike.
I am really excited about this project because I have been a pretty big mountain biker for the last few years, and I have always loved computers, and putting the two together is a dream come true. This is something that I have thought about as an idea for a couple of months now, and to be able to do, and as a project for school is super cool to me.
